Knowing When To Hit Or Stand In Blackjack
Blackjack is basically a simple game. If you are simply playing for fun, you can have a very enjoyable experience. The rules get more complicated if you attempt to count cards or otherwise increase your odds of winning.
One way to increase your odds of winning is to know when to hit or stand. There is no real science to this aspect, it is merely a good rule of thumb. By knowing when to hit or stand, you win be better able to control the flow of the game and hopefully increase your odds of making some money.
The Dealer: For the most part, the dealer is required to stand on 17. Some casinos give the dealer an option of hitting on a soft 17, but this is rare. In all casinos, the dealer must hit on a 16 or less. This is often in your advantage, because a card with a value of more than 5 will cause the dealer to bust. The odds are in your favor at this point because the number of cards in the deck with a value higher than 5 outnumbers the amount of cards with a value of 5 or less by approximately 2 to 1.
Your Hand: Generally, you want to follow the same rules as the dealer. With a hand of 17, you would normally stand, unless the dealer has a face card showing. At that point you must assume the dealer has 2 face cards with a value of 20. This is where you make the decision to hit or stand. Often players will hit in this situation. With a 16 or less, you will naturally want a hit. There is very little value in standing on a 16 in blackjack.
